The blast in the French capital is believed to be linked to a gas leak at a store on the Rue de Trevise in the 9th arrondissement.
Firefighters have been called to the scene and images posted on social media show buildings on fire and cars in the street damaged by debris.
A police spokeswoman said several injuries have been reported to officials but no deaths.
French television showed emergency vehicles surrounding the streets in the north-central part of Paris. Police have told people to stay away from the area.
The explosion came amid heavy security across France for more yellow vest protests expected later on Saturday.
